How it began
Dr. Karolina here.
One of my favorite speeches of all time began like this:
“As I walk down the hall, I see patients young and old, and they all have one thing in common—I am their doctor.”
I was 10 years old when I gave that speech.
But my path to becoming the doctor I am today was not easy. I grew up in an inner-city school system of Detroit, where I often had to take learning into my own hands and would spend hours after school at the library.
Fast forward through many years of study, and I found myself as a graduate of medical school and a faculty member at the University of Michigan, one of the greatest medical institutions in this country. I was close to receiving a position to train as a Gastrointestinal Fellow.
Then one day when I was on call at the hospital, I had an experience that shifted the trajectory of my career in an instant.
On that day, I admitted a woman to the hospital for the sixth time that year. Even though she was taking her prescribed medications for anxiety and high blood pressure, she kept getting worse. On that day, she was in the hospital instead of at her son’s birthday party, and it hit me that we were not helping her heal.
By chance on that same day, we had a lunch & learn on the topic of mindfulness and natural treatments for menopause. I went back in the room with that patient, recommended she have her hormones tested, and knew I had to pursue learning a more root-cause approach to medicine.
Instead of becoming a gastroenterologist, I spent the next 10 years completing an integrative medicine fellowship and the most esteemed functional medicine certification program in the country. Today I am more committed than ever to helping women get to the root cause of their symptoms and truly transform their health.
